This session will pain, agitation, and delirium in patients on mechanical ventilation.  This is a very common issue that critical care and emergency medicine pharmacists encounter on a daily basis.  It will also help to reinforce previous material about opioids.

1.  Explain methods for pain assessment in critically ill patients
2. Select an appropriate opioid analgesic based on patient specific characteristics and analgesic properties
3. Evaluate opioid-related adverse effects in the ICU
4. Describe dosing concepts and relative potencies of opioids in the critically ill
5. Define an appropriate RASS goal for a patient on mechanical ventilation 
6. Select an appropriate sedative for sustained sedation based on patient specific characteristics and sedative properties
7. Explain PK/PD issues related to opioid analgesics and sedatives
8. Discuss methods to prevent and treat delirium in the ICU
